A Mandate to Govern
On November 4, 2008, Barack Obama and Joe Biden were elected President and Vice President and received the most votes out of any Presidential election. With 69,498,516 votes, Obama/Biden easily defeated challengers John McCain and Sarah Palin by 9,550,193 votes. Clearly, the American people sent a message to Washington, D.C. that Barrack Obama was the clear choice to govern. With this new mandate, his platform and his campaign promises would soon become a reality because an overwhelming majority of Americans supported him through this election.
Along with the overwhelming majority of Americans supporting the top of the Democratic Party ticket, they would also support a vast majority of the lower ticket races. In the U.S. Senate, Democrats would outnumber Republicans 57-41. In the U.S. House of Representatives, Democrats outnumbered Republicans 257-178.
